Year 7
Autumn | Half term 1 – Poetry
Students study a selection of poems from different eras and cultures. This unit focuses on developing students’ abilities to analyse how poets use language, form and structure. Half term 2 – Gothic This unit enables students to develop their abilities to write imaginative and entertaining texts inspired by the gothic genre. |
Spring | Half term 3 – Reading non‐fiction texts
Students study a variety of non‐fiction texts, such as leaflets and newspaper articles, and examine how writers use language to achieve certain effects. Half term 4 – The Ancient Greeks Through studying a selection of Greek Myths, students produce their own non‐fiction texts related to these stories. |
Summer | Half term 5 – Class reader
Students study a novel and explore its context, language and central themes. Half term 6 – Introduction to Shakespeare Students examine the context in which Shakespeare was writing and produce creative writing pieces inspired by events in one of his plays. |
Year 8
Autumn | Half term 1 – WW1 Poetry
Students study famous war poems and explore how poetry was used as Half term 2 – Major Writers Students examine a selection of texts from major writers, such as Charles |
Spring | Half term 3 – Reading non‐fiction texts
Students analyse non‐fiction texts which are designed to argue, persuade, or advise the reader. They examine language and presentational devices used and explore their effects. Half term 4 – Writing non‐fiction texts Following on from the previous half‐term’s work, students produce their own non‐fiction texts which are designed to argue, persuade, or advise the reader. |

Autumn | Half term 1 – Poetry
Students study a cluster of poems from the AQA GCSE ‘Moon on the Tides’ anthology to enable them to develop the skills they will be using at GCSE. Half term 2 – Class reader Students study a novel and complete GCSE style tasks, such as using an aspect of the novel as inspiration for their own piece of creative writing. |
Spring | Half term 3 ‐ Shakespeare
Students practise answering controlled assessment style questions about characters or themes. Half term 4 ‐ Writing skills Students practise answering GCSE style exam questions which cover the following skills: inform/explain/describe and persuade/argue/advise. |
Summer | Half term 5 – Reading skills
Students practise answering non‐fiction GCSE exam style questions on use of language and presentational features. Half term 6 – Introduction to GCSE course. Students will begin to study one of their GCSE texts. |
